Jamie Dornan takes on Aragorn in a new chapter of Tolkien’s universe

Jamie Dornan prepares to step into one of the most closely identified roles in modern fantasy cinema. The Irish actor will play Aragorn in "La caza de Gollum", the new film set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth, directed by Andy Serkis, who will also return as Gollum. The release date is December 17, 2027.

Aragorn carries the weight of a character closely associated with Viggo Mortensen, who portrayed him in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy. Early in the project, producers considered digitally rejuvenating Mortensen, but ultimately chose a new performer. Dornan was aware of the comparison and chose to acknowledge it rather than pretend that the role comes without expectations.

The story takes place before the events of "La comunidad del anillo" and follows Aragorn as he searches for Gollum at Gandalf’s request. The aim is to prevent Gollum from falling into the hands of Sauron’s servants and revealing information about the One Ring. At this stage in the story, Aragorn is still known as Strider and has not publicly revealed his identity as Gondor’s heir.

The film also reunites several familiar faces. Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf, Elijah Wood plays Frodo, and Leo Woodall appears as the ranger Halvard. Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens, producers of the original trilogy, are accompanying the project.

Does Dornan convince as the new Aragorn? In my view, the challenge is enormous, but his comments show a respectful and emotionally intelligent approach. He does not try to compete with Mortensen; he proposes to recover part of the energy that the original performance brought to the character. That may be the most sensible way to approach a role with such a powerful legacy.

The wait will be long: those interested in the new chapter of Middle-earth have until December 17, 2027 to prepare their visit to cinemas. The price for the premiere has not been announced.
